1. Washington Times Ends Sunday Publication

In this digital age, some newspapers are struggling with declining print revenue and decreasing circulation figures. For that reason, the Washington Times recently announced that it would discontinue its Saturday and Sunday publications, and run a print edition Monday through Friday only. This eliminates the Times as a less expensive general circulation alternative to the Washington Post for DC area jobs. The Times can still be used as an additional recruitment step, to fulfill the local paper option.

Interesting to note, in 2009, the Washington Examiner added a Sunday print edition to its Monday through Friday newspaper. Currently, the Examiner's Sunday paper has a circulation of over 220,000 copies, covering areas in Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland. It is up to you if you wish to consider the Examiner as a general circulation option.

2. Pennsylvania Visa Scam Cheats H-2B System

Recently four former employees at a Pennsylvania staffing company pleaded guilty to scamming the visa system in order to bring hundreds of illegal workers into the United States for their clients. The staffing company recruited workers from outside the US for client businesses and then helped obtain fraudulent work visas for them. By applying for a greater number of temporary work visas than its client businesses needed, using falsified personal information and names selected randomly from a Mexican phone book, the company was able to create its own personal stockpile of approved H-2B visas.

It is estimated that between 2003 and 2008, the company submitted more than 1,600 false documents to the government. They even instructed undocumented workers to return to their home country while they arranged for the fraudulent visas, and to lie to US State Department officials during visa interviews about whether they had ever been in the United States. The company then chartered buses to return the aliens to Pennsylvania where they returned to work for their former employers. Approximately 433 illegal aliens were brought to the US in this manner between February 2005 and June 2005.

All four former employees have pleaded guilty. The owner faces a mandatory five-year prison term and a maximum of 95 years, while the other employees face various prison terms under federal guidelines. H-2B visas are designed for companies that cannot find Americans who are willing and able to fill their jobs. Due to an annual visa cap of 66,000, this scam made work visas unavailable for workers and businesses trying to use the system legitimately.

USADWEB is aware of the issues surrounding visa fraud. We understand the importance of legitimate and lawful immigration practices. We also understand the H-2A and H-2B process and can make your seasonal peak load recruitment process a much simpler one by assisting with the recruitment for them.

3. Understanding the Tearsheets Process

At USADWEB, our job is not complete until you have received all of your proofs of publication. We know that tearsheets are a critical part of the advertising process. That's why we take special care to ensure the timely delivery of all proofs of publication for any advertisements that you place through our service.

What is a tearsheet?

A tearsheet is the proof of your advertisement on the page on which it was published. At USADWEB, we request tearsheets from publications at the time when your order is placed. Tearsheets are generally mailed to us within two weeks after the run date. Upon receiving the tearsheets, we copy and resize them for convenient filing. Once we have collected all of the proofs for a case, we mail the originals with a photocopy of each to your office. We keep one set of copies on file for our records as well.

What is an e-sheet?

An e-sheet is an electronic tearsheet. Many newspapers and magazines have adopted an "e-sheet" system for sending tearsheets. E-sheets are not photocopies. They are electronic versions of the actual tearsheet, produced by the advertising media. In many cases, the newspaper name and the ad information appear on a tab along the side of the sheet. For PERM cases, e-sheets are recognized as original proofs of publication. Newspapers and other media that offer e-sheets may no longer send original print tearsheets. Originals may be available upon special request, sometimes at an additional cost from the publication.

What if it takes longer to receive my tearsheet?

It does happen that a publication will neglect to send out tearsheets to us or that they will get delayed in the mail. Your ad representative is committed to contacting the publication to track down and deliver the tearsheets to you. Sometimes the process takes multiple follow-up requests. If you ever have any questions or want to check on the status of a tearsheet, you can always contact your ad representative.
